93 Things Grandma Loved - #8 Egg Custard

Grandma used to make her own custard. I didn't really like it very much, because it was made from eggs, which I wasn't too fond of as a child. Well, actually I loved egg yolks, but egg whites made me gag. I could barely tolerate them in scrambled eggs, if the eggs were blended to remove any trace of white, and were softly scrambled - completely done, but not tough and browned.

I still don't care too much for egg whites, but I'm less phobic if a morsel of cooked egg white should happen to wind up in mouth - you know like I can actually eat potato salad with egg whites in it and not get grossed out.

Sorry, this was supposed to be a post about Grandma's egg custard! When we started having chickens and goats, the occasional abundance of eggs and milk prompted me to test out egg custard. Just to see if I could stand it at all. As it turns out, I actually like it quite a bit.

Thanks for introducing custard to me, Grandma, I finally love it!

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #7 Black Olives

It is coming up on the one year anniversary of my Grandma passing from this world into her heavenly home above. My mom is still having a very hard time dealing with the loss of her mother.

Grandma always had cans of Early Californian Black Olives on the shelf. She would break open a can and all of us children would mill around waiting for her to put olives on each of our fingers. It was a giant treat; I don't remember my mother ever having black olives on hand just for eating! I mean, she bought them for cheese enchiladas, but never as a snack or treat.

Whenever I eat black olives, I always remember Grandma.

I love you, Grandma.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #6 Cantaloupe

I don't know how she did it, but Grandma ALWAYS had a ripe cantaloupe on hand whenever we came over to visit. It must be my imagination, because 30-40 years ago if cantaloupe wasn't in season, it wasn't available for eating. Nowadays of course we can get just about anything we want anytime of the year just by going to the local grocery store. Sadly, cantaloupe doesn't taste as delicious as it did when I was a youngster. Is it my aging tastebuds? It used to be so succulent, juicy and sweet. Now they don't seem to have that same sweet taste. I do know how to pick them - press the end and it should have just a bit of give. That indicates if the melon is ripe.

On the day we had my Grandma's memorial, my sister Dee Elle brought several ripe cantaloupes. After the memorial, several family members stuck around and we had a little picnic together right in the parking lot. That was a nice remembrance of Grandma.

Love ya, Grandma.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #5 Red Rope Licorice

Grandma always had Red Rope licorice on hand when we visited. I hated black licorice, and I don't remember her having that. The popular red licorice now seems to be Twizzlers. It's okay, but doesn't bring back the memories of the Red Rope licorice. Kev and I were in town the other night and I spotted it. He persuaded me to buy three ropes in memory of my Grandma.

Grandma, I look forward to seeing you when we all get to heaven. I love you.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #4 Grandpa

My Grandma loved my Grandpa. She married him the year she turned 30. I remember her telling me she was considered a spinster, because she was so old. I guess back then, when the life span was much shorter, no one ever figured they'd live to be 93.

Love ya, Grandma.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #3 Peacocks

My grandma loved peacocks. This is one of the pictures my mom gave me to scan for the CD that I'm putting together eventually. I believe this picture was taken at our local zoo, and I think my mom said my brother took it and gave it to Grandma.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #2 Pretty Rocks

On the day we went to photograph the mountains, I was walking along noticing the rocks on the road and I remembered that Grandma loved pretty rocks. She used to pick up pretty rocks while taking a walk and bring them home and put them into a small area behind her back door.

I remember picking up pretty rocks and carrying them in my purse when I was in the fourth grade. I once broke a mirror in my purse from the small stones I was carrying around. :-)

I found all the rocks in the picture above in the same area. Lots of green rocks, some shiny with fool's gold, some black and white and lots of others.

Until next time.

93 Things Grandma Loved - #1 Mountains

To commemorate my Grandma, I'm going to begin a series sharing the things she loved. My goal is to list one item for each of the 93 years she was alive.

Today when I walked onto the porch and saw the mountains in the distance, I thought of my Grandma and how much she loved mountains. I remember her big picture window in her living room and she would talk about the pretty mountains. I think she loved mountains so much because she came from Ohio and I think there aren't many mountains there. So mountains were new and interesting and special to her.

Ds2 had asked me to wake him up early and make sure he stayed up, so I woke him up once and after I saw the mountains I wanted to drive closer to them and take pictures together. So I went back into his bedroom and asked him if he wanted to go with me to take pictures of the mountains. He was game and we left in a few minutes. We drove a mile north and then several miles to the west.

We went down a dirt road heading closer to some mountains in the distance. In the picture above, ds2 caught the road before and road behind in the rearview mirror.

If you click on the image you can see the large view. Our vehicle is in the middle of the photo, on the road. I was all the way up on the little mountain.

This is a picture from on top of the little mountain.

Until next time.
