High Speed Internet On The Horizon

Ooooooooohhh!!! I contacted a place that sent a postcard recently, about their broadband Internet option. I was told the cost for equipment and installation will be $199 plus tax, and $49.95/month. The option prior to this was DirectWay, (I thought it was DirecWay?) DirecTV's deal, which is $700 upfront for equipment and installation and $60/month.

This is a much better deal. I am planning to deal with our remaining debt first, before signing up. Although the thought of connecting at a faster speed is soooooo tempting! I have been hired by a client to create a new webpage for her new business, this time a personal one. I created three sample pages for her to choose from and she's having a hard time deciding which one she likes best. Makes me feel good.

I'm up extra early this morning... I've been doing better at getting up closer to 4am. If I get out to milk shortly after four, I can get to work on time!! Yeah, I know I keep saying I am up at four to milk, but that is hard somedays.

Ds2 asked me to take vitamins and my cod liver oil last night. He takes his own "round" of vitamins every evening, faithfully, and he says he feels a lot better when he does. I know I should as well, but get tired of it. Although it does seem like I slept better and don't feel so tired this morning. I will have to see if I can stick with this for a while and see if it makes a difference in how I feel. Since I've been getting more exercise working with dh on the weekends, it does seem as if I feel less tired... hmmm...

One of my coworkers and I went out to lunch yesterday, we were gone two hours! It was nice and relaxing. My boss wasn't at work, so we didn't have to worry about her fussing at me over being gone too long. ;-) We are allowed to have a leisurely lunch on occasion. We only do it 2-3 times a year.

Be sure to click on the image to see it larger. I had the pleasure of witnessing that glorius sunrise this morning on the way to work.

Until next time.

Took The Big Plunge

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Blogger beta. Apparently they are going to make us do it within the next couple months, so I figured what the heck, may as well go for it and check it out.

Apparently they have included a way to easily categorize our posts! I am looking forward to that being easier than my current method.

Until next time.

Another Trial Loaf of Bread

So I put my third trial loaf of bread into the breadmaker this morning. I am trying to perfect Marilyn Moll's recipe for my breadmaker. Since I wasn't home when today's loaf finished baking, I can only go with ds2's opinion that it was a perfect loaf. It didn't fall this time, nor did it have a pudding thingy in the middle. I will try the recipe one more time in a few days, and post the recipe once I'm sure it is going to work.

I worked with dh on Saturday and Sunday, and ds2 went with him on Monday. I was so grateful to have the day off. I managed to fulfill the dinner obligation, making a pork roast into Cuban Sandwiches. It's a rather long drawn out procedure, beginning with marinating a boneless center-cut pork loin roast for two hours to make a Cuban Roast Pork Loin. The recipe came from _The Gourmet Cookbook_ by Ruth Reichl (although I have included links to similar recipes for anyone curious). The pork roast was very tender and the marinade gave it a very nice flavor. Probably the best pork I've had in a very long time.

Three weeks ago, the first day I worked with dh, ds2 had a lovely meal cooked and ready to be served. I was so very grateful. I'd been slacking off at preparing a meal for the guys, even asking ds2 to help me cook once they came home. It's hot out there, and hard work that makes you ravenously hungry, and it's so nice to come home to a hot meal. So I recommitted myself to the task of preparing a nice meal on the days I'm home to cook.

I've been debating the issue of our milk supply. The does' production has all dropped, to my dismay. It is getting to be "that time of the year" when the production goes down, so that's normal. But I'm worried that since none of them have ever been "milked through" they may just dry up by February or May. We would then be without milk. So I was thinking about breeding three of our young doelings, who will not be old enough until November and December. This pushes kidding season into April and May. So I wrote to a friend of mine who has had goats since before 1972, and she advised that we take a break this year (essentially Plan A). She said the does production will probably increase by February, and she suggested that we watch our young doelings in case any of them become maiden milkers. The doe who passed away this year, 26 hours after she kidded, was a maiden milker. Her daughters may have inherited the ability to be maiden milkers, which basically means the doe will come into milk without being bred. Another of our does bagged up before she was bred, so it is likely that we have that genetic potential in our herd. Two of the young doelings are already beginning to sport tiny udders, so I will keep an eye on them as they mature. There are many different solutions for maiden milkers, and it is usually referred to as "precocious udder". Some say to ignore the udder which is bagging up with milk. Others say to use a drying up teat infustion treatment (which is antibiotics actually injected into the teat, through the orifice, OUCH). My friend says she has always just milked maiden milkers and they will often produce well. Some breeders have never experienced even one maiden milker, so I figure with two in our small herd, that would be cool if ours came into milk without breeding, and then had long lactations on top of that. That is my hope!

She said that way we wouldn't have to worry about the population explosion, nor getting the does through pregnancy and kidding, caring for the babies, etc. It is a very stressful time of year.

So I guess for now, that is the plan. Stick with Plan A, and not breed anyone until Fall 2007.

Until next time.

Another Test With Blogging by Email

Since the recent storms, I have been experiencing even worse than usual connection times to the Internet. It was bad enough at 24,000kbps but now I'm having to suffer connections of 12,000kbps and 9,000kbps. It's horrible. Disconnecting and reconnecting several times sometimes helps. I'm excited when I get connected at 19,200kbps. What kind of slow is this, you wonder? Well, I thought waiting 3 minutes for Blogger to load their main page so I can login was bad. Try 8 minutes. It has become even more important for me to blog by email.

Being a perfectionist... I have to shove aside the fact that I'm not categorizing my entries. It takes MUCH DARNED TIME!!

I really enjoy being able to share pictures, and I don't think I can if I include the photo in an html email. But I'm going to try an experiment with this post.

For the record regarding the bread... it fell again. The first loaf had a gob of raw dough in the center, referred to in ds2's bread book as a pudding pocket. The book indicated a pudding pocket can be helped by allowing the dough to rise twice. Or at least rest before the first kneading. So the second loaf fell, which means the dough is too wet. I am going to try with another loaf soon.

Here are a couple of pictures I took today. One is a Saguaro cactus, the other is Cholla aka Jumping Cactus. I'm sure you will need to click on the link to see the image. I seriously doubt that the IMAGE will show up. [8-29-06 Update - the images did not show up. I had to alter the HTML via Blogger.]

Jumping Cactus

Saguaro Cactus

I wonder what the new beta Blogger is all about...

I am beginning to grow desperate for a faster Internet connection. I was content at 24,000kbps. Even having DSL at work, I was still able to tolerate that speed. But now connecting at half that speed, and down to one-third or less, it is just plain frustrating. It is difficult to imagine paying $100 per month, or $700 up front for the equipment. Once the equipment is paid for, the cost would drop to $60/month. Which would actually only be about $20 more a month than what we are paying now for the ISP and the dedicated phone line.

Until next time.

Zucchini Custard Casserole

I'm going to start this dish tonight, and prepare it for tomorrow night's dinner. If I had all of the ingredients on hand, I'd start it this morning and make it for dinner tonight. I'm missing zucchini squash though. [I hope no one took down the recipe, because I've changed it to the ingredients (changed some amounts) that I actually used.]

  • 6 slices of firm sourdough bread (I am using my kefir bread, which is very sour -- I have used my very sour kefir bread before, and the sour taste is somehow neutralized so that when it is served, it is not sour)
  • 1/4 cup soft butter
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 2 medium zucchini squash, sliced thin
  • 4 oz can chopped green chiles
  • 2 cups (about 1/2 lb.) shredded cheddar cheese (or your choice but not too sharp)
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper

1) Spread butter on slices of bread and arrange buttered side down in 9 x 13 inch dish. 2) Distribute corn evenly. Arrange zucchini over corn. Click on the thumbnails to see a larger image. ImageShack likes us to use the thumbnail in order to save on bandwidth.

3) Sprinkle chiles over zucchini. 4) Sprinkle cheese over the top.

Beat eggs slightly, then beat in milk, salt & pepper. Pour egg mixture over cheese. Cover & refrigerate overnight.

Bake uncovered in 375 degree oven for 30-40 minutes, or until lightly brown & puffed. Let stand about 10 minutes before serving.

Makes 6-8 servings.

I will try to add a picture once it's baked. [Here ya go!]

I'm also making another loaf of bread today using the "soak the flour" method. I'm soaking 3 cups of freshly ground whole wheat flour in 1 cup water, 4 Tablespoons kefir and 1/2 cup raw milk. It was just way too sour using a whole cup of kefir (even though the kefir was fresh and mild.) It will sit out today to neutralize the phytic acid, and then I will probably prepare the
dough to put into the breadmaker around 2pm. That gives the flour 8 hours to soak.

Until next time.

Catching Up In August

I have missed an entire week of blogging. I thought about it every day, but put in some extra hours (23 hours counting driving time) of working over the weekend and didn't have much computer time at all.

Ds2 renewed his interest in cooking and along with cooking dinner several days in a row, he baked an awesome bread in the breadmaker. Some of the ingredients were curry powder and craisins (dried cranberries) and raisins. Oh, it was soooo luscious. I thought about taking a picture of a slice, but it didn't stick around that long.

I made a loaf of bread... soaked the flour first to neutralize the phytic acid. I used 1 cup of mild kefir and 1/2 cup water for 3 1/2 cups flour. I figured out how to make it work using the breadmaker. I'll have to document that sometime before I forget. I used the Urban Homemaker's 2 Stage Process For Yeast Breads recipe. It turned out pretty sour, so I am going to save it for my Zucchini Custard Casserole dish that is a big hit here. Recipe to follow once I make it.

On my way to work yesterday morning it rained very hard, and continued for a while after I arrived at work. I love when it rains. I am lucky enough to have a window in my office so I can see outside.

We decided on the laptop, purchased from Fry's Electronics for $649.99 plus tax. An HP Pavilion DV5215US Entertainment Notebook. It has all the features Ds2 wanted, except it doesn't have a dual processor, which is new technology anyway, and raises the price by $200-$300, I'm told.

We returned the other laptop to Tiger Direct. Hoping and praying that turns out to our benefit and we get all our money refunded.

The insurance saga appears to be over. The company refunded checks for both years. The weekly calls to the mortgage company did exactly NOTHING. But once I called the insurance company myself and cancelled, things started to happen. I am very disappointed in my mortgage company over this situation. Someone could have told me they couldn't do anything' instead all the people I talked to just kept reassuring me that they were working on it.

Ds2 found our second cell phone AC adapter. We've been sharing one for weeks. Ds2's replacement cell phone arrived, so no more sharing the battery. I don't recall that I blogged here about that... his battery would not charge while in his phone. So I would have to charge the battery in my phone, then switch my charged battery into his phone, then charge his battery. He also found one of the earbuds. I had been avoiding talking on the phone while driving since I didn't have my earbud.

I'm getting accustomed to my new schedule. If I head toward bed by 7:30pm at the latest, I can get up fairly easily by 4am.

Ds2 made a half gallon of tapioca pudding today. Made with real tapioca pearls, medium size. Delicious stuff.

My stepfather died a few days ago. He was an evil man. My brother and two sisters that he fathered were pretty broke up about it. They were 5yo, 7yo and 9yo when my mother kicked him out. So I guess they really didn't get to know the real man. Or maybe they blocked it out. It was pretty interesting for my mother, for when she talked with her three oldest children, they were happy to hear the news. Of course, it helps he wasn't our father.

And now that it's 7:38pm, I must call my pooch in, put him to bed, brush and floss and hit the hay myself

Until next time.

The Great Laptop Hunt

Ds2 is still not sure what to do about getting a laptop.  I called the company we purchased the current one from, and said that we had decided to have it replaced.  The guy I talked to started pressuring me to buy a service warranty for $139.00/year.  I told him that I was not interested twice, and he started in a third time.  Instead of answering him this time, I said, "Why don't YOU give me a discount because your website gives false information about this computer?"  (He had admitted to me earlier in the conversation that they had made a mistake and he said he would make sure he told someone about it, so no one else got confused.)  It got real quiet.  I just held my tongue.  We sat there, a good thirty seconds, if not longer.  Finally I said, "Are you there?"  He said, "Yes, I'm here."  Then there was more silence.  (I think I foiled him because my response was not on his standard list of replies, lol.)  Finally he asked me if I would be more inclined to purchase the service warranty if they would give me a discount on the laptop.  I said I would.  He said he had to talk to his superior and it might not be much of a discount, because they hardly made any money on them to begin with, but he would see what he could do.

Well, about an hour later, in my email, I receive a confirmation of my order for a laptop and TWO YEARS worth of service warranty.  For all I could see, I was being charged for this.  So I called back right away and talked with someone else and told them I wanted this order cancelled and furthermore I wanted my money back and didn't want a replacement laptop due to this order being placed without my permission.  The lady I talked to said my credit card hadn't been charged, and she would cancel the order and gave me two numbers to return the things we had purchased.

Circuit City has a two week return policy, with a 14% restocking fee.  So we looked around for someplace that didn't charge to restock.  Ds2 had decided on a different laptop.  So he called CompUSA and they said they had a 21 day return policy and no restocking fee.  Cool.  So I went to purchase the laptop, and I double checked on the return policy.  Come to find out since it's a LAPTOP, no, they don't charge a restocking fee, and yes you have 21 days to return it, but only if you bring it back in the box UNOPENED.  Otherwise, they will issue a gift card for the full amount.  HUH!?  I went up front and asked a second person, who confirmed that this was indeed correct.

Cool.

NOT.

Needless to say I left the store.  FYI, this isn't complaining about my life, it's a general public warning about these computer places.  You have to ask and re-ask before you get the whole story.   They did explain that this is to prevent people from "renting" a laptop for a couple of weeks and returning it to the store.

Here is the laptop we were looking at buying: Compaq Presario v6030us Notebook

Until next time.

Got The Printer Working

YES!! Stopped by Fry's Electronics after work today, my route
home takes me right past, so that was fairly convenient. I went
in and had a look around until I finally found what I was looking
for. $18.99. A side bonus is that now my ds2 can print from
his laptop. He could not previously, because his laptop doesn't
have the obsolete serial port connector (apparently that's not
the correct term, but I don't remember the correct one).

Got home, plugged the printer to the computer with the USB
connector but it didn't work right away. I had to add a new
printer, and this time choose a USB port, instead of LPT1:
Printer Port.

I got it working. Whew. Off to bed.

Until next time.

Onward Positive Thinking

I have had some truly spectactularly frustraging -- ooooh, I like that word... too bad it isn't a real one. My frustration does move to near rage at times. You know, basically those situations where if something can go wrong, fifty things in a row do? But I digress. I have had some truly spectactularly frustrating happenings in the last few days. It's almost like I'm being tested - remember that book I mentioned about trials? Well, I have decided I'm not going to give any more focus to the incidents. Really, when I'm reading over these ten years from now, am I going to care? Almost certainly not, so why focus on them now?

Okay, so the picture with the tottering pile of dishes is courtesy of ds2 a few days ago. BTW, the bottom plate is tilted just the tiniest bit, since the sink edge has a bit of a lip on it. Next we have a bowl, then an upside down pickle jar. Two or three more cereal sized bowls, then a PYREX bowl!! ARGH!! lol A plastic bowl and finally a silicone scraper.

Today I took a bunch of pictures of the plants on our property. I can identify some of them, but most are a mystery. But I own a very cool book called Weeds of the West which will help me identify all of the weeds and includes common names, scientific names and the scientific family name. It was an investment, since it is out of print - copies on half.com start at $30.00. It has great closeup color photos of the various weeds. You might ask, "Who cares?" Well, when you own goats, it is good to know what is on your property. You don't want your goats eating something poisonous, which you could have identified and eradicated. I meant to do this identification probably well over a year ago, maybe two years!

What I found fascinating is that some of the plants that I have seen and identified on our property, were not present today. Duh, this of course means that weeds are seasonal, like vegetables and fruits. Very neat!

One weed that I remove immediately, without delay, (meaning I force myself to grab a shovel and remove the thing THIS MINUTE!) is the bullhead sticker. This is what we called them when I was growing up because they look like the skeleton of a bull's head. We had NONE when we moved out here. I could walk barefooted through the whole property, but I suspect we have tracked some home from my SIL's house since they are overrun with them. According to my book, this particular weed is actually called Puncturevine Tribulus terrestris L. Zygophyllaceae (Caltrop family). Non-standard names: goathead, Mexican sandbur, Texas sandbur. The image shows one of the bullhead sticker weeds which I pulled out by the root this morning. The "bullhead" is the seed, which according to my book is comprised of FIVE sections. So the sticker you see enlarged in the photo, to the bottom left, is the seed, which breaks into five bullhead stickers. Each plant grows out into a large area; another that I pulled this morning had already grown to cover a space about two feet square. Seeds line the vines every inch or so. So for every plant that grows unchecked, there is potential for a large number of thorns to be scattered around our yard. Every place I've lived for my entire adult life, I have made a point to eradicate this weed. They seem to have some type of poison in the thorn; it is painful enough to step on a quarter-inch long thorn, but then it leaves something in your skin that stings and burns.

A storm is nearing, so I had better get off this computer and get it unplugged! I still cannot get my printer to work and am planning to buy a USB to serial adapter tomorrow. I think the cord that connects the computer to the printer might be fried, or perhaps the plug in on the mother board. So I'm just going to bypass the serial port connection altogether and use the USB connections, which still work. I have a very nice HP LaserJet 4, which I just bought a new (refilled) cartridge of toner for, and which is very economical for printing, so I'd rather just get a new connector cord than rush out and buy a cheap inkjet printer.

Until next time.

Back Online!

I finally got a chance to spend some time with my computer. I
removed the modem from my old computer, installed it into this
one and crossed my fingers. While I was in there, I noticed the
huge buildup of dust and *hair* lining the CPU fan. I haven't
been able to bring myself to buy canned air, it is so EXPENSIVE.
I noticed that Costco has a four pack for under $12, guess I need
to invest in that. I used the vacuum cleaner to get as much dust
and hair as I could.

I thought I'd try installed the CD burner at the same time... I
got everything hooked up swearing that one day I'll have a desk
setup so it's simple to get to the back of the computer... and
turned it on. I got an error message about the CD burner. I
forgot to set it as slave. So I unplugged everything, got that
reset and hooked it all back up again. Same message. Unhooked
it and went with that. I still haven't backed up my 2005 photos!

The computer recognized the "new hardware" - the modem. I
plugged in the phone cord, but I can't see that far and that tiny
print, to figure out the correct plug, so tried the first plug,
then the second plug. No dial tone on both tries. ARGH!! Went
to ds2's room and knocked rapidly. "Come in," he said. I
couldn't spit the words out, so said, "I installed a different
modem." He told me he'd just gone off the Internet with his
computer, so I could try again.

I'm back!!! I'm connected at 26,400bps, which is faster than the
other computer connected me at (19,200bps). I'm currently
downloading 868 messages. I also have to figure out why the
printer isn't recognized by the computer when I try to print.

We have gotten rain for three days in a row. The earth is
finally saturated, there were actually a few puddles in the yard.
Dh noticed there are MILLIONS of maggots in the cow pen, so he's
out there shoveling right now. I'm going to get something to eat
quickly and go out and help him. If we don't do something about
that, we will have MILLIONS of flies again, this time I won't be
able to blame it on the rotting cantaloupe fields.

I got a batch of sauerkraut started today.

I'm reading a book that explains why we have trials... it helps
to understand why life is so difficult at times... I will most
likely share here eventually.

Until next time.

Storm Fried My Modem

AGH! I am posting from my son's new laptop, which has to be returned. It has the wrong video card for one thing, and keeps freezing up and rebooting itself, and we keep getting the blue screen of death. I tried to email a post on Wednesday evening, but the laptop froze up on me.

On Wednesday morning, the electricity went out and at one point our home was struck by lightning which actually went through the phone cord and a spark flew out. I had to leave for work before the power came back on, so I could not test my computer for damage. Later in the day, ds2 turned it on and it appeared to be okay. But it does not recognize its modem. Also, the printer won't print anything.

I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot, but hope to do that tomorrow.

Not sure when "the next time" will be...

Someone Dropped The Ball

Hopefully I'm drawing near to the end of this insurance fiasco.  I posted about it on July 14th

Our mortgage went up by $70 a couple of months ago.  We have an escrow account and I know the only way the amount increases is if the insurance or taxes go up.  Both stayed the same, give or take a dollar or two.  I researched the escrow statement and saw that an insurance payment of $625 was made in April.  Our insurance is $429/year.  I had just received the declaration pages on my insurance, so I knew I was right about that.

I called the mortgage company to find out what was going on.  I found out that in addition to paying the WRONG insurance company in April, they had also paid them $611 in June 2005.  So I have been calling the mortage company every single Monday to find out if they have made any progress with getting the insurance money refunded to our escrow account.  They keep saying they are working on it.

I was getting sick of the run around, so I decided to ask my sister-in-law, who is a real estate agent, if she had any advice.  She said bypass the mortgage company, call the WRONG insurance company.  Explain to them what is going on, she said they should refund the insurance money.  So I called them, and the guy I talked to said fax the declaration statements and they would refund the two years worth of insurance.

Today I finally remembered to take the dec. statement pages with me to work, (easier to fax from work than home).  I decided to call my insurance agent, just to make sure I had all my ducks in a row.  During the conversation, I said, "Now I'm good on the insurance through your company, right?  Because remember they were going to cancel my policy but you called my mortgage company who said they would overnight a check to you so you could pay the insurance company so they wouldn't cancel?"  She says, without a second's hesitation, "Oh no, I don't know anything about that."  So I reiterated what I'd said and I don't remember what else was said, but then I was hanging up, and I decided to call the RIGHT insurance company, just in case.

I get them on the phone and they inform me that my policy was cancelled for non-payment on June 1st.  So I called my insurance agent's office back and this time I got the answering machine.  I left a message and told her what I'd found out. A few minutes later, I get a call from another woman from the insurance agency, asking me for my mortgage account number because she was going to call the mortgage company and find out what was going on.  I told her, and I tried to ask her what the heck was going on, but she cut me off.

She calls me back a bit later and explains that I have to call my mortgage company and explain what is going on.  LOL.  Like I haven't done that ten weeks in a row already.  I told her that I was uncomfortable about not having coverage and I would be willing to drive to their office after work and cut a check right away out of my own pocket instead of waiting on the mortage company.  Because the mortgage company told her they would not pay any more insurance companies until they were reimbursed from the wrong one.  Oh yay, yippee, now they are watching out for my best interests!!  So she gives me the number for the insurance department of my mortgage company.

I call that number and the guy who answers the phone asks for information from me, then asks if I'm an agent.  I tell him I'm not and he says that he's going to connect me to customer service.  I argued with him, saying that I needed to talk to someone in insurance, and all that was going to happen was he was going to transfer me to CS and they were going to transfer me right back to insurance, and he didn't even know what my problem was.  He just transferred me.

By this point, I'm so mad that I'm about ready to stomp through a wall.  I told the lady who answered that I was very upset, and I wished I could get my house refinanced today with someone else, so I could stop dealing with her company.  I told her I would try not to be a *itch and she was actually very nice to me.  I thanked her profusely at the end of our conversation.

I explained what they had done, and I explained that now, thanks to them, my cheaper insurance company had been cancelled.   She told me to fax my dec. statement pages to the more expensive insurance company right now and cancel them.  She said she would notate in my account that I was cancelling the insurance with that company.  As far as she could see on her screen, I was covered by two insurances.  I told her the one was already cancelled in June.  She said they had no record of that, and as long as I was getting coverage again today, I would be okay.

So I faxed the declaration statement pages to the WRONG insurance company, and instructed them to cancel my policy.  I then called them and talked with a woman who told me that it was that simple.  All I had to do was send my dec. statements and she would cut me a refund check for the two years.  She says to expect a check within 10 days.

I have never seen so much incompetence in my entire life!!!  I cannot believe that I have to babysit my escrow company, my insurance agent, other insurance companies.  Because apparently, my insurance agent never cancelled the insurance with the more expensive company!!  Was that my fault?  She's the one that wrote me a new policy, they stopped using that more expensive company altogether.  How am I supposed to keep up with all these things?

Do I need to call my electrical company every month and find out if the guy came by and read my meter correctly?  Do I have to call to make sure they really got my electronic funds transfer payment just in case they don't turn off my electricity and forget to notify me?  Do I have to call my car insurance company every month to make sure I'm still covered?  Can't I just make some assumptions about things?  Can't I have any faith in anyone?

I just don't understand.  I think the other lady called me from my insurance agent's office, because she knew the other lady messed up.  I think the other lady is an older woman and I think she's getting forgetful.  When she told me a check was being overnighted to her, so she could pay my insurance, I had no doubts that that would get done.  It didn't occur to me to double check and make sure the check was received by her, AND that she had sent it.  Should I have to?  Do I have to babysit everyone?  What's the point of having an escrow company (terms of my mortgage, so I don't have a choice in the matter) if they aren't doing their job?

Until next time.

Hens Off Strike

It's official, the hens are off strike. Last Monday they began laying again. We put fresh hay in the nests on Saturday, and actually bought some eggs from the store and put a couple in the nests to encourage the gals to start laying again. They started out with two eggs Monday, then two on Tuesday, then five on Wednesday, six on Thursday, nine on Friday! They laid 6 on Saturday and 7 yesterday.

I began supplementing the goats with copper and milk production is slowly increasing - by 1/10th of a pound each day. L gave me 3.7 today, Z gave me 3 pounds, M gave me 3 pounds, D only gave me 2.3. 12 pounds total. The orphans got 1 quart of that this morning and once I got in the house and processed the milk, another quart for this evening's bottles. That leaves a gallon for the rest of us! Whoo! One of these days I'll be able to make something WITH the milk, rather than just drink it. I have cultures for buttermilk, sour cream and some cheeses.

On a list I'm on, someone posted an article from USATODAY.com which contained a link to see if raw milk is available in your state. I was surprised to see how available raw milk is in Arizona. That has certainly not been the understanding. I'd like to poke my head in the sand and pretend it's legal and hang up a shingle out front... but I know better.

Until next time.

My New Glasses

My New Glasses - Image Hosted by ImageShack.us My glasses were ready on Friday afternoon, and I was going to wait until I went to work to pick them up. But I had the opportunity to go into town today, so I have them now.

In the image to the left, here is a picture of my old glasses, the fogging that I've been dealing with. This picture actually portrays the fog fairly well, but of course nothing can compare with wearing the dang things.

My Old Glasses - Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Okay, here's the new ones, complete with magnetic clip-on sunglasses.

And, did you happen to notice my text is wrapping to the side of my photos? Yes, I wondered if I snagged the html coding that Blogger put in for previous photos, could I tweak it to work for my current photos?

I'm happy that worked. I like to be able to write to the side of the posts. I do wonder though... if these photos are too wide. I had previously suggested on my blog about using ImageShack that 4" wide photos were best. But then I decided 5" wide photos worked just as well. [Correction: After posting this entry, the 5" wide photos were MUCH too wide. There was only a one inch space to the right side for the text. So I resized the photos to be 4" wide. Hopefully this will work better.]

Now on to commentary about my glasses. It is the first time I've worn progressive lenses. I am told it may take one to two weeks to get used to them. The optical technician told me the rule of thumb is to point your nose toward whatever it is you are looking at, and then you should be able to see clearly.

It is GREAT to be able to see clearly now! The fog was driving me nuts! But it is a bit annoying as it seems like I can only see clearly exactly whatever is in line with my nose. For example, if I'm looking directly at the television, and if I move my eyes (keeping my head still) a foot to the left or right, it's blurry. I have to actually move my head -- point my nose -- in that direction to see clearly. If I want to see something on the floor, then I must tilt my head parallel to the floor to see clearly, otherwise I'm looking through the up close reading prescription and it's very blurry. It is going to take some time getting used to all this head movement.

We brought LJ with us today. He has been wanting to go on a ride in the car. We brought him with us into an automotive store. I had asked previously if he could come into the store and they gave me permission. So today I just brought him in and it was okay. I was working with him on sitting and staying. He was pulling really hard on the leash all day long. I kept stopping him and making him sit, and then we would start again. He just kept pulling and tugging.

Finally, I took the collar and put it up around the top part of his neck, like Cesar says to do. WOW oh WOW, what a difference! He could no longer PULL!! Pitbulls compete in pulling heavy carts, so it is natural for him to want to tug and pull. I realized he is using his shoulders against his collar to pull. But if the leash is up around his neck, he cannot get any leverage, and therefore cannot pull. It's like magic!!

I noticed while standing there waiting in line, that people seemed to be making a point to avoid LJ. The employee commented to me that these were great dogs, and had owned one for 16 years. A patron waiting in line behind us greeted LJ and reached out to pet him, and said these dogs were so misunderstood. LJ went to him happily, but then came back beside me and laid down. We chatted a bit about pitbulls, and I commented that I had heard that some place, I thought Denver, Colorado had created a ban and enforced it to the extent of going into people's home and removing their dogs and euthanizing thousands of dogs. He said he had moved out to our area and bought a home because he was unable to find an apartment in town that would allow him to keep his Chow-German Shepherd mix dog.

Until next time.

The Browser Didn't Automatically Reload

Okay, one more by email. This is AWESOME!!! SO much faster,
light years faster! I will definitely take advantage of this
option for blogging on busy days or when I just don't have the
patience to sit and wait for Blogger.

Anyway, I was wrong. The browser didn't automatically reload. I
must have clicked reload and didn't remember doing it. Duh. But
it's still way cool.

Until next time.

Blogging By HTML Formatted Email

That was cool.  I had my browser on my blog page, I emailed the post and my browser automatically reloaded and there before my eyes, was my latest blog entry.

Okay, I read more of the help page.  Apparently plain text emails appear as straight text, even if HTML coding is used.  I use plain text for email almost exclusively, but I have set this email to compose in HTML.  Let's see if the following link will show up as a clickable link:

Blogging By Email

I understand we can blog via email. With my slower-than-molasses
dialup connection, Blogger takes forever to load so I'm scouting
around for some new options. I understand you cannot upload
images via email, but some days I don't have images to share. If
I could bang out an entry, send by email at least a couple days
of the week, it might be more of an incentive.

If you would like to try it, here is the help page from Blogger
on how to change your settings:

Let's see how this works.

Papaya Pepper Sauce

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
One of my friends has been including a picture of dinner as one of her entry topics. I thought last night's dinner was worthy of the same recognition.
I bought a papaya yesterday, intending to use it in my morning kefir smoothies. Dh wanted hamburgers for dinner, but I'm trying to avoid carbs as an experiment to see if it helps me feel less tired, so I planned to have just a burger by itself. When I was younger, you couldn't pay me to eat funky sweet foods with meat. You know like people will have pork chops and apple sauce? I used to gag at the thought. But I decided to make some type of "sweet" tasting sauce for the burgers. I looked in my Nourishing Traditions cookbook to see if there were any recipes for papaya. There was, but it is a fermented chutney relish. I wasn't planning on waiting two days for dinner. ;-) I had envisioned papaya with red pepper flakes, and kefir to begin with. As I mixed the ingredients together, I came up with a few others to add. Here is the recipe I ended up with.
  • 3/4 cup of papaya, mashed into a creamy sauce
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon finely diced and crushed cilantro
  • 1 small avocado, diced
  • 1/4 cup mild kefir (you could get the same results using buttermilk)
  • 1/4 teaspooon red chili peppers
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • salt to taste

Along with the burgers, I also made steamed cauliflower, eggplant and zucchini squash. Ds2 made kale. Butter on the veggies. I made a point to serve myself smallish portions. Ds1's allergy/asthma specialist once gave me some tips on how she stayed slender. She said she doesn't make a big deal out of it, but then she started telling me how she uses medium sized plates and the portions are kept small so that none of the food touches each other. She went on a bit, and then she realized she kind of does make a big production out of serving dinner.

The papaya sauce tasted kind of funky all by itself, but when it was eaten with a bite of meat it was quite good.

Ds2 is making beef bone broth; he started it cooking last night. We bought about $30 in neck bones, and other assorted bones. I have never made the Nourishing Traditions beef bone broth before, only the chicken version. The bone broth cooks for 72 hours. The point is to extract the minerals and calcium from the bones into the broth.

Until next time.

New Battery Blessing

Yesterday I had to work a bit late. I have been working all week long to construct an Excel spreadsheet which will make the end of fiscal year reconciliation easier next year. I thought I was done, and had all the numbers for my boss, but after she left, I realized I still had one more billing area to reconcile. I had to do the company banking, so left early to do that, intending to come right back. I got out to my vehicle and it hesitated at starting, but turned over and I noticed the clock was at 12:00. That usually means the battery has been disconnected. I got to the bank and I thought to myself that I should park someplace where I could get a jump if I had to, but I went against my feeling and just parked in a normal spot (facing inward toward another car). Got the banking done and came back out. Click. Nothing. Click. Nothing. Click. Nothing. Drat!! I popped the hood and checked the cables to make sure nothing was loose, and to make sure there wasn't a bunch of can't think of what it's called, that turquoise "growth" that gets on the battery cables which interferes with the contacts. Everything was okay, so I tried to start it again.

I was sitting there talking to dh on the phone. It was pretty hot out, so I had the door open. I would try to start the truck again and it would click, then the next try there was nothing at all. So I thought maybe if I closed the door, the battery might recover just enough to crank the engine over. I hung up, intending to call one of my coworkers to see if I could get someone to come over and give me a jump. I tried one more time. SUCCESS!!

I drove to the nearest Checker Auto and had one of the guys come out and test the battery. He thought it was testing out to be okay and asked me to start the engine so he could test the alternator. He said the alternator was fine, and told me that he could see now that the battery was starting to go bad. He said the starting the engine part was okay, but the battery wasn't holding a charge.

I bought a new battery and had him install it for me. It was almost $90.00 for the battery, with an 84 month warranty.

So the odd thing to me is how quickly a battery can go dead. I haven't had any indication that anything was awry. I'm thankful that I was able to get the truck started and on my way.

Until next time.

No More Blind Spots

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Ds2 bought and installed these nifty little mirrors to my sideview mirrors.

There is nothing like the feeling of knowing all the vehicles in traffic around you, you are sure that you know there are none to the left or right, for you have been watching diligently. You turn on your signal and take a quick look just before you nudge the wheel to change lanes and SURPRISE!! There's someone in your blind spot!

I've been practicing using them in the past few days, and so far it seems if I can make it a habit to always view the tiny mirror, as well as the sideview mirror, the chance of the surprise will decrease significantly.

I still don't think I can break the habit of that precursory head twisting look... for me, since I wear glasses, my peripheral vision is blurry, so it requires that I spin my head nearly around to make sure it's safe. ;-) Speaking of blurry vision... it has been 8 days since my eye exam. My glasses should be ready in 1 to 2 weeks. I am starting to get excited about having 20/20 vision again.

Today I felt MUCH better than I have felt in many days. I have been making sure I get my kefir smoothie, with my organic virgin coconut oil, and today I took my selenium, kelp and cod liver oil. Dinner tonight was chicken breast tenders, a bag of stir fry veggies with butter. Ds2 made bulgur bread in the breadmaker. I had a few bites, very good bread! He's really trying to get more into the Nourishing Traditions cookbook. He told me he learned today that it's not sugar ON your teeth that causes the problem, it's ingested sugar making your teeth rot from the inside out. Uh yeah! Like I haven't said THAT before, lol!

On Tuesday, dh put a rooster on to make chicken bone broth. The recipe cooks for 24 hours. It is supposed to be very nutritious and healing, especially if the broth gelatinizes. People who have digestive disorders are often healed by consuming bone broths.

I am planning to watch a movie this weekend which was recommended to me by a coworker last week: Days of Heaven with Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard, and Linda Manz. This movie was made in 1978.

Until next time.

Not Using Blogger Images

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Having the slow dialup makes uploading pictures using Blogger to be quite frustrating, and I swear more than half the time Blogger somehow loses the photo. It's annoying when I want to add more than one photo, because every single upload, uploads the images to the top of the text. I then have to move it back down to where I wanted it. I can't easily move the image to left, right or center, without deleting and reuploading it.

I discovered another way, which is MUCH easier. I have been using Imageshack recently. It is a FREE image hosting site, which even has a "quick post!" option to any blog out there (as long as you are planning to upload only one photo to that blog entry. Pretty nifty though.

You don't even have to have an account with them. But I went ahead and signed up and downloaded their toolbar which makes it really easy because then you are just dropping and dragging from your browser's toolbar.

If you don't want to download the uploading tool, just go to www.imageshack.us

Be sure to modify your photo first, making sure it is not too wide. I have found that 4 inch wide photos work best, you might try 6 inches wide, but it might funk up your blog's layout.

Click on Browse, locate your image, click "host it!"

You will come to a page that gives several URLS. You want the one that says "Hotlink for websites" Copy that one. The URL is so arbitrary that I have been keeping a file with the links and the image name so if I want to link to it again, or look at it again, I can find the link again (in case I don't use it on my blog right then). Imageshack puts in some text to give itself credit for allowing you to host the photo on its website, so don't modify the html coding.

Now if you sign up for an account and download the toolbar, you eliminate the concern of losing the link to the photo. The other funky thing about not having an account is you cannot delete the picture which you uploaded to any ol' where. At least not that I can see. So your photo is just out there floating. I also name my photos anonymously.

Okay, now to your blog. You should be in the entry in which you want to add a photo, click on Edit Html. Scroll down to where you want to put the picture. Paste in the URL that you got from Imageshack.

Click on Compose or Preview. You photo should load and you can see how it looks.

I haven't been able to figure out how to tell blogger to do the neat wraparound thing where the text wraps around the picture, like when you upload via blogger. But it's WAY easier to do it yourself with the link, you never lose your images.

BTW, the image above is one of my ds2 from the other day. We climbed up a small mountain, it was thundering and the clouds were dark and forboding. I love the way this picture turned out.

Until next time.
