A Few Things That Happened Today

Something's up with Blogger and Firefox today. I stopped using Internet Explorer some time ago, and much prefer Firefox. But when I logged in and tried to make a post, this is what I was met with:Quite a mess. I tried shutting Firefox down and reopening, but got the same gibberish. I could have made a post and published it, but there was no way to upload photos. And that's why I'm here today. To share what we got today. Dh was reading one of the local newspapers which mentioned a vegetable and fruit coop was coming to a nearby city. I contacted the group through the website and discovered that they actually have two drop off locations in our area. So we signed up for one box. This is what we got: 5 pickling cucumbers
10 limes
1 honeydew melon
1 butterleaf lettuce
6 medium russet potatoes
9 red plums
8 nectarines
11 large carrots
7 red onions
4 bosc pears
5 mangoes
7 bananas
5 tomatoes

Our basket cost under $20. It is supposed to $50 worth of fruits and vegetables, and they say it will last a family of four for two weeks.

On the way to pick up our basket - which by the way we spent $6.89 for the round trip into town and back home for gas - a lady was putting out yard sale signs. Dh had to go to a job today and was leaving as soon as he dropped me off. I asked him if he thought that lady might have anything good for sale. I guess I ask the question that way because I don't really care one way or the other if we go and see? He said it wouldn't take that long to look, so we followed the signs. She had bullhead sticker plants all over her yard. I am SO glad we don't have them on our property. I have pulled up several of them and keep my eyes peeled for them and remove them if I see any of them. Dh's sister's property is practically a farm of the horrible things.

At the yard sale, I saw a pile of towels. Lots of nice, thick, mostly purple towels. I asked how much she wanted for the towels - she only wanted fifty cents each! They aren't brand new, and have some strings hanging on some of them, but they are better than most of the towels we are currently using! The three on the left are large beach towels, one is yellow striped and the other is a hot pink striped, then a purple one on top of that. In the next pile there is a thick, soft maroon towel at the bottom, and three matching lavendar towels on top. The next pile there are three purple towels with four hand towels, and the pile on the right there are four thick, soft deep purple towels. In the front row there are six washclothes. She was asking for ten cents each for the hand towels and washclothes!

I also saw this Singer Tiny Serger and asked how much she wanted for it... four dollars! The only problem is we didn't have any cash left as we'd used the last $8 in dollars and change buying the towels and washclothes. So I asked dh if he wouldn't mind running back by her place on his way out. He was happy to do that, so she held it for me. Now I have read some good reviews about this little machine, and some terrible reviews. It didn't come with the manual, which could be a problem. I hope I can get it to work! If you know how I can get a manual for it, or if you happen to own one, and have a manual for it, I'd sure be grateful for a scanned copy! Here is a beautiful photo of the sunrise I was able to capture the other morning.
My doctor's appointment was on June 20th, and yesterday I received a call from the office that schedules referrals. This was to schedule a mammogram. I wish I could be like many people seem to be, happy that their doctor wants them to radiate their breasts just in case. I hate having all these stupid tests and frankly it just stresses me out to know that my doctor wants me to have them done. She acted like I'm the stupid one, and indeed many people would probably think that way about me, because I haven't been getting tests done all these past few years.

How do you find a doctor that is there for you when YOU want them for something, and leaves you alone the rest of the time? And doesn't put your files into the archive area?

I asked if my blood test results had been returned and I was routed to an answering machine to leave my name and number. The only reason I even went to the doctor was to get the referral to my asthma/allergy specialist. I wonder what he would charge if I just went straight to him without a referral and paid out of my own pocket? If I didn't have asthma I wouldn't be seeing him either. Really, I'm just fine without all these doctors.

I know I have the right to ask for my test results so I can examine them myself, but it is difficult to work up the energy to do something as stressful as that. You're probably asking, what's so stressful? Well, I have to go in and ask. Working up the nerve to do that in itself is stressful.

I've been putting together a brochure for our church in the past few weeks, and I made a really glaring mistake on the front. I was mortified and called our pastor immediately and he had JUST come from the printers, having printed up 200 brochures. I told him I'd pay for the mistake and I've printed them myself, and have also merged addresses for mailing, and have been folding them.

Kev and I are going to church camp this summer. I hope that will be relaxing, and not one more stressful thing. Today as we were going to pick up our vegetable and fruit basket, I found myself wishing I could get my garden going again. I have had so much trouble with the critters out here it is a lot of work to keep them from eating everything up. The entire garden is fenced with chicken wire, the top and the sides, and the last time I gardened the gophers dug their way under and were pulling vegetables into the ground by their roots.

We're getting quite a bit of milk now. Almost one gallon is coming into the house every day, I freeze half a gallon every day from the previous day. We are getting another gallon or so which we divide up between the dogs and the chickens. We had flies for a time and so we were milking at 3am every single morning, even on the days we didn't have to go to work. I think that is what just about did me in. I would sometimes come in and go back to bed by 5am, but it is very hard for me to get up that early every single day without a break.

Dh started another sideline to his business and we're trying to get that off the ground. I've ordered business cards, and created websites for the two businesses. Dh's been doing some cold calls for the second business, hoping to drum up some business. He's got one contact that seems like it will turn into a good opportunity.

Okay, Kev fixed Firefox for me. He hit F5 and did a refresh and now it's working okay. Thanks, Kev!

Also, he edited a short movie I took while outside in the afternoon. Enjoy.

Until next time.

No Poo - 167 days

I began the No Poo Experiment on July 30th, 2007.

What is No Poo, you ask? Well, it means not using shampoo on one's hair. That's right, I discontinued shampooing -- with chemical-laden, hormone-disrupting, commercially-produced detergents -- 167 days ago. (Shhhh, I did shampoo at my hairdresser's request on my wedding day).

My hair is doing great. The first thing I noticed, and continue to notice is my hair isn't falling out like it used to. It is normal to lose a few strands of hair but when I'd shower there would always be a pretty good sized wad to deal with. My scalp seems much healthier also.

I wash my hair every other day. I have a plastic container with a screw on lid that I keep my baking soda in, and an old shampoo bottle (take THAT commercial shampoo companies!) which holds my apple cider vinegar.

I just plunk some baking soda into the plastic glass I keep in the shower, then fill it up with water. Pour it over my head and massage my scalp all over. Rinse, and do the same with some vinegar in the cup diluted to the top with water. I pretty much guesstimate the amounts, but I can tell when I don't get enough baking soda, because my hair feels heavy and can have a greasy look to it.

I love it! It's inexpensive and all natural!

You can check one of my previous posts on No Poo (Day Eleven) where I include some helpful links which persuaded me to embark on the No Poo Experiment.

Until next time.

Why Can't Every Day Be Like Yesterday?

I can't seem to find the rhyme or reason for why I have energy. All of a sudden, I'm struck with inspiration and drive to get something done. Other times, I feel like I'm trying to walk with lead shoes. Heavy lead shoes.

Yesterday started out early in the morning, around 2:30am. Dh was just getting up to get his day started and I got up for some reason - I don't remember. I immediately started in looking for things that are missing:

1. My driver's license
2. A debit card connected to child support money being sent to me (taken first from dh's check)
3. 2008 calendar to go on the wall beside me

I have no idea what happened to my driver's license. I cannot remember the last time I used it. I was asked for it, to show proof of identification when using a debit card as a credit card the other day and it wasn't where it should be. It's not on my desk, nor any other common place.

I went through a bunch of old mail looking for the child support debit card. Nada. Last night I found a stub from when they were sending checks, which gives a website that I can go to and see what is going on with the account.

I didn't look too hard for the calendars, as I discovered earlier today they are right on my desk, between the printer and the monitor.

Probably around 4am, I decided to just give up and go back to bed, because I was so overwhelmed with everything that had to be done. My mind kept whirring for a while and I discarded each concern as they came and finally fell to sleep again.

I got up at 8am and had some breakfast, a couple of chicken sausages with sauerkraut. Ds1 came out of his room. I have been giving him a trial period of keeping his room clean to see if he can do it, so I don't have to invade his territory. He has been doing a fairly good job, especially at bringing his dishes back into the kitchen. There was only a bowl and a plate in there when I asked him to bring them out. But he still needs some help, it was pretty messy. We opened a window to let in some fresh air and we began working on it together. It took more than two hours to get it completely cleaned up again.

Then I decided to clean ds2's room as a surprise to him. I also hoped it would illustrate to him how wonderful it is that he has been milking for us lately. Not every single day, but he is taking on that chore at least a couple days a week and it has really been a great thing. I don't hate milking, but some days I get home from work and I'm just worn out. It is also very pleasant to have a break from milking a couple days a week. I have been the sole milker for over a year now, and it does become a bit tedious.

That took a while, and then I started on dinner. Around 2:30 I put some of our own beef on the stove. Most of our beef is gone, but we still have some stew meat and soup meat, and a few other cuts. The soup meat are rounds of leg meat with a round bone in them, the stew meat is cut into chunks. I started that boiling with an onion and some garlic, and a splash of vinegar to help extract the calcium from the bones.

I worked on the kitchen on and off throughout the day. I cleaned the new popcorn maker so the grease wouldn't harden - I actually did that first thing in the morning.

I also took readings from our electrical meter, to see how much electricity it uses to run our dryer at the "on-peak" periods. With minimal other things turned on in the house, and only the dryer running, we used 6 kilowatt hours. On-peak costs $0.13 per kilowatt hour, so it costs $0.78 to run the dryer between 9am and 9pm, Monday through Friday. Between 9pm and 9am, it is significantly cheaper, $0.05 per kilowatt hour, coming in at $0.30.

I also ran a test on the air conditioning fan, which sometimes runs 24 hours a day... to my chagrin, I discovered it costs approximately $3.12 to run between 9am and 9pm. OUCH. No wonder our electricity bill has skyrocketed!! I have just not had the energy to figure these things out, and have just let things go on without saying anything.

I began looking at the electricity usage when I ordered this P3 International Kill-a-Watt Electricity Usage Monitor for myself for Christmas (thanks, Mom!). I am still checking what various things in the house use in the way of electricity.

I am also making another batch of Pioneer Woman's Butternut Squash Puree. That means I need to get the squash baking in the oven!

Oh and this morning, I used a quart of kefir given to me by my job to put into the soft serve ice cream maker and made soft serve kefir, which tastes like yogurt.

Okay, I had better back into the kitchen. It's now 2:13pm.

Until next time.

Day Four No Poo

I thought I'd blogged about this already, but I guess I haven't.

I have been using Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner for the past few years. I kept forgetting to put shampoo on the list until I finally ran completely out last week. Ds2 and I went shopping at Costco on Sunday and he picked up a bottle for me there. I figured it was Herbal Essence brand so no need to check the ingredients on the label. Well, doggone it, this particularly concoction "Hello Hydration" includes an ingredient which I've known for many years causes my scalp to itch. It's the "Ammonium" part: Water , Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Ammonium Laureth Sulfate , Sodium Chloride , Cocoamide MEA , Glycol Distearate , Dimethicone , Ammonium Xylenesulfonate , Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract , Cocos Nucifera Milk Coconut , Fragrance , Cetyl Alcohol , Polyquaternium-10 , Sodium Citrate , Sodium Benzoate , Disodium EDTA , PEG 7M , Citric Acid , Propylene Glycol , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Blue 1.

Normally, the ingredients contain "Sodium" which is why I began using Herbal essences in the first place: Water , Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide , Sodium Chloride , Citric Acid , Sodium Citrate , Coral Flower Extract Russelia Equisetiformis , Prunus Persica Nectarina Extract , Fragrance , Sodium Benzoate , Tetrasodium EDTA , Polyquaternium-10 , Propylene Glycol , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Sodium Xylenesulfonate , Yellow 10 , Yellow 5.

So come Monday morning I get my new bottle of shampoo and glance at the ingredients just to make sure, and there it is: Ammonium.

So I decided to try no-pooing again. So far it's worked out good. The last time I tried it, I couldn't get past 10 days or so. Dh says my hair looks greasy. I washed it this morning, but just twisted it into a bun without brushing and it was still damp. Here are before and after brushing photos:

BTW, my camera was set to the wrong day. I did take these pics this morning before work.

It's cheaper to use baking soda and apple cider vinegar than to buy shampoo and conditioner. Especially since my ds1 who has alopecia with no hair at all uses 1/4 bottle of shampoo each time he showers. No wonder I run out so fast!

Why You Should Go No-Poo

Until next time.

My Birthday

My birthday is the 25th.

My sister and I have talked about how we tend to start buying a few things here and there for ourselves a few weeks prior to and after our birthdays. See, we try to not buy every little thing we desire on a whim, but around our birthdays it's a great excuse to just get what we want. That doesn't mean I go out and buy $1000 stereo systems or a new computer. I'm talking fairly inexpensive things.

Although I tend to buy things for myself prior to my birthday, I would really prefer that those gifting me would wait *until* my birthday. But oh well. I'm not really complaining, but it's up to me to buy myself something for my birthday. Maybe my family will cook a special meal on my birthday. Friday the 25th of May.

So far my family had a surprise party for me, my mother gave me my card and $40 on the 3rd... with which I bought myself two shirts and maybe a baseball cap. I have been wanting to buy some of my Cafe Press shirts just to see how they look in real life and so I bought one of The Herd Queen and the other of LJ when he was a tiny little puppy wearing a sweater I'd crocheted for him. I also bought a baseball cap which I am planning to give to dh and ds2 and I picked out a shirt for dh that we thought he'd like.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of those shirts. I really hope my shirts look good, the image, I mean.

I also bought myself a ironing board cover. A really nice one. It was regularly $11.99, but was on sale for $10.39. The scanner rang me up at $11.99, so I took it back to customer service. At this particular store, if the item is under $5, they give it to you free. If it's over $5, they give you $5 off the sale price. I told the lady it was marked down to $10.39 but I guess she heard me say $10.49. I wasn't going to quibble over a dime. Then another $5.00 off on that. I found the one I bought from my local store from Target online. You can see it here: Ultra Ironing Cover and Pad Set - Tranquil Leaves. It has this neat silicone pad where you can lay the iron down onto it *when it's hot* even. Neat. I haven't used it yet, but I did get it onto my ironing board.

I bought myself a book yesterday, having read an article shared with me by a friend on one of my non-dieting email lists. The article is here: Genes Take Charge, and Diets Fall by the Wayside by Gina Kolata and is actually an excerpt from Ms. Kolata's book Rethinking Thin: The New Science of Weight Loss — and the Myths and Realities of Dieting which I purchased from buy.com for $10.15, saving $10.00 by using the new Google Checkout.

I almost purchased this yesterday and may yet purchase it today: CERVINIA CALZETTERIA SOCK & FINGERING YARN.NEW.PRINT.. The link won't work forever, since it's an eBay auction. But here is a picture of the yarn:

I snagged the image from Smiley yarn. The color I like is Naples 904, which is the reddish colored yarn. Smiley's is selling this yarn for $2.50 per skein. Minimum order $40 though... and $12.95 shipping for however much yarn you order. I'm not sure I'm prepared to spend $52.95 on yarn today. ROTFLOL. I thought I'd get a better deal than on eBay and I guess I would get a better deal because if I ordered 16 skeins of yarn at $2.50 the shipping comes to only $0.80 per skein. But still! $50 is a lot of money to spend on yarn at one whack when I don't have much time for knitting to begin with *AND* furthermore I already have quite a stash.

And I do have some pink yarn asking me to please make socks with it.

Last but not least, ds2 ordered me a new keyboard and mouse. He researched both items some time ago and he does a great job researching to find good quality items. I can't wait for these to arrive: Logitech MX518 Gaming Grade Optical Mouse and Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 M17-1844.

He ordered them for me from Amazon, where I had a $25 gift certificate so my total cost there was $35.00.

Now I must get to work.

Until next time.

50% off Goodwill Shopping - April 2007

I went to Goodwill with a list, three things for which I've been looking. (Now THAT is grammatically correct.)

  1. Four drawer letter size filing cabinet, preferably Hon brand
  2. Soap dishes (these things are ridiculously expensive, like $6.49 at Walmart!)
  3. I can't remember the third thing
Dh had agreed to stop by his boss' house. Bossman's brand new eight hundred dollar Whirlpool washing machine was stampeding its way across his laundry room. First of all, the washer was simply placed on top of the pedestals, and they are supposed to be secured together. Dh didn't figure out what the problem was, but while we were there I read in the INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS that the shipping bolts had to be removed once the washer was in place. Bossman said there weren't any shipping bolts, and dh didn't press the issue, but is pretty sure he saw four bolts that could have been them. Today I googled the problem and found that my suspicions were correct. The shipping bolts weren't removed.

If I can help it, I will NEVER buy an electronic washer or dryer. That darn thing held Bossman's clothes captive, the door would not open. You can't move the dial to do what YOU want to do. What if you just want to spin some clothing you hand washed? Not sure if that's possible nowadays.

Dh put a call in to Bossman today and left a voice message to let him know what we discovered. After we finished there, we had to drive 25 miles to the other side of town to another of dh's coworkers, an elderly woman (72) spry and so perky you'd never believe she was that age, who needs to have a bunch of miscellaneous jobs done around her home. Dh leaves the money stuff up to me or ds2 and since I was along, I had to deal with it. She made several comments about money problems, so I left feeling like a jerk for charging them instead of just having dh doing everything for free. But they have this long list and want us to come back next Saturday. I only charged them $45 for three hours work. So we can't just drive into town, weekend after weekend, one of our only days off, doing free work, you know?

I was looking forward to this trip into town, usually unfortunately I'm somewhat aggravated about it, since I'd just as soon stay home and clean house, knit, blog, nap or something else equally fun. I guess dh making money is nice, too, but I keep buying all these things to sew, knit or home improvement projects and when do I have the time to do any of them? For example, in the past week I bought six gallons of OOPS paint from Home Depot (really high quality paint mistinted and marked down to $5/gallon) but when will I have time to paint? Not on my one and only day off, Sunday.

I was looking forward to the trip into town because Goodwill was having their 50% Supersaver Saturday Sale at all their stores.

I ended up spending $55.28 AND feeling guilty. And trying to persuade myself I shouldn't feel guilty because mostly all the things I got were practical and would have cost several times more if purchased brand new.

So here's what I got. I found my filing cabinet! Not Hon brand, but the drawers roll in and out nicely, so seems to be a quality cabinet. Black, no lock, four drawer, letter. $6.50. I'm so glad dh dissuaded me several months ago from impulsively buying a used filing cabinet that was FIFTY dollars.

Once I found my filing cabinet, which made me very happy, I began looking around more.

I found five glasses (we have had NOTHING to drink out of lately). $0.34 each.

I meandered into the bedding area; I'd been thinking about buying a second set of bedding for everyone's bed for the past few weeks. Now was my opportunity.

I found two brand new looking, twin sheet sets with a planet and stars theme. 2 fitted sheets, 2 flat sheets, 1 bed skirt, 2 pillow shams and 2 pillow cases. The sheets and bed skirt were all marked $3.99 each, but as I examine my receipt, it appears I was charged $1.99 for each one and THEN 50% off on top of that! The pillow shams and cases were $0.74 for each set of two. Total cost for the first set: $3.35 [One flat, one fitted, 1 sham, 1 case and 1 bed skirt]. Total cost for the second set $2.36 [One flat, one fitted, 1 sham and 1 case]. And YES, I was feeling GUILTY for spending money. Those two sets will cover ds1's twin bed and the twin bed in the master bedroom.

Next I found a fitted sheet for the master bedroom queen bed, we don't use the flat sheet, and two pillowcases. The sheet was $2.99 and the cases were $0.74.

I also picked up a fitted sheet for ds2's full size bed. $2.49 and two pillowcases $0.74.

Now everyone has a second set of bedding. Usually I have energy when I'm stripping the beds, so my hope is the spare set will be clean and available so I can strip the bedding and replace it right away. By the time the bedding is out of the dryer I'm lagging, so it should be nice to get that done and out of the way while I've got the energy.

We have started to use placemats on the table, since ds2 will make our plates ahead of time, and put them in the oven for warming. I found five placemats - we only need four, but how could I leave one behind? Total cost for all five: $0.49.

Dh thought ds1 would like this cute cookie jar to put pens in. $4.99.

Dh also like this sterling silver casserole dish, which included the Pyrex casserole: $7.48.

I found two soapdishes: $0.83

Dh found some weird wooden thing with two rings on each end and thought it was neat: $0.99

Dh found a pair of work coveralls for $3.49

Two mystery items, I can't recall what they were, coming to : $1.73. $1.39 for a Pepsi for dh. No tax.

And last but not least, ELEVEN skeins of 100% virgin wool. Each skein weighs 2 ounces. The label says "Irish Twist Yarn for Aran Sweaters. Made Especially for Mary Maxim." The bags with three skeins were marked $3.99, and the bag with two skeins was marked $2.99. As best as I can figure out the receipt, the gal only charged me $1.99 for the bags marked $3.99, charging me the correct price of $2.99 for the one bag. The yellow tagged items seemed to be half price, prior to the 50% coming off. ?? So, the grand total for this wool yarn: 22 ounces for $4.48.

In the two skein bag there is a spool of thread that says "Gütermann 500 m 547 yds/vgs CA02776 100% Polyester Germany".

I have no idea what this wool is about... it has a dye lot number. I wonder, does that mean that *I* can't dye it? Like that Kool-aid dyeing? I found a blog that isn't very active that seems to have something to do with this yarn.

I am really tired. I'm going to lay down for a while.

I have cleaned ds1's room today, washed three loads of clothes, cleaned the stove including the drip pans and changed the aluminum foil under the drip pans. Went into town to buy ds2's newest video game, came home and then went and bought ten bales of hay.

I need a vacation.

Until next time.

Yarn Stash Post - April 2007

Okay, here is the yarn I found last weekend:

First bag: $0.99. Yellow tags 50% off. Five balls of *something*, in a dark rose color. I'm not sure what material, I haven't had a chance to figure it out yet. Probably acrylic? Yarn Harlot tells how to figure out what type of material in her book Knitting Rules : The Yarn Harlot's Bag of Knitting Tricks. From memory, acrylic burns, but wool doesn't. One ball of light pink acrylic, and one ball of Aunt Lydia's Baby Denim 75% cotton, 25% acrylic in light pink. The Aunt Lydia's retails for $4.99 at JoAnn's.
Second bag: $2.99. Six balls of "Made in France" Ungar Fluffy. 100% Acrylic. 1 3/4 ounce, 156 yards per ball.
Third bag: $3.99. 1 skein Bernat So Soft in a cream color. One skein Red Heart Super Saver Navy Blue. And two skeins of Red Heart Baby white sport.
Fourth bag: $2.99. 7 skeins of Lion Chenille. 100% acrylic. Brown. 1.4 ounces and 87 yards per skein. I believe this is a discontinued item of Lion Brand's.
Today I found a really cool, old, nearly antique iron. $10 from a yard sale. It's heavy, by Sunbeam and pink. I can't wait to try it out. But now it's bedtime.

Until next time.

Happy 20th Birthday, DS1

Ds1 was born at 12:02am on the 16th. Coincidentally, I worked for the State Department of Revenue, tax division. Everyone else was hard at work, while I was in labor with my firstborn. 3 minutes earlier, and he would have been a tax baby.

Speaking of taxes, I've worked since 1979 and I have NEVER had to file an extension, but the past few months and now the busiest schedule ever, I have not had time to get our taxes done, so this year I am filing an extension. I need some time to figure out how to claim our ranch - I had hoped we could claim it as a business, but I really don't see how we'll EVER make a profit at this rate. Here's a list for farmer's at the IRS site. Here's the entire Farmer's Tax Guide. I've been told you can claim a loss five out of seven years, but Ellie Winslow's Making Money With Goats says you have to claim profit three of five years. I can't figure out which is correct by searching IRS.com. We spent close to $6000 on the livestock in 2006, so I don't see how selling a few dozen eggs and some milk to my family is going to do us any good. I think if I claim the couple hundred dollars "profit" it would be best under the IRS definition of a hobby since then we wouldn't liable for taxes on the measly income.

Plus you aren't supposed to include expenses for anything used by oneself, so we'd have to figure out how many eggs we ate. We actually did very dismally last year at selling eggs. I remember frying up dozens at a time a few times, feeding them to the dogs and chickens. Now that dh and I are both making an effort to sell at our jobs, we're doing very good with not wasting any eggs. We are selling them for only $2.00/dozen though. That's better than last year, when we charged $1.50/dozen!

Filing for an extension will give me more time to think, and will relieve stress.

It was fun thrift store shopping on Saturday during the great desk hunt for ds1's birthday desk. I found some yarn -- mostly acrylic, unfortunately. The first Goodwill we went into I found some Lion Chenille to add to the stash. $1.99 for six small skeins, in a medium brown color. I don't have the yarn here with me, but I think the color is Mocha. Wow. This stuff seems to retail for $6.99/skein!!! I found some pretty soft turquoise (acrylic) that was made in another country, maybe France? Part of me so wants to be a yarn snob and only buy WOOL, but personally I don't find $16 per ball of sock yarn to be inexpensive. (Yarn Harlot says that's cheap when you figure it takes her 16 hours to make a pair of socks, so entertainment at $1/hour for her). I'll have to post about my finds some other time.

The only Saver's we shopped had several clocks. I examined all for the possibility of making this year's birthday gifts, but none would have worked. I found one really cool star one. I wish I'd bought it now. I did pick up a nice oak clock for ds2 for $3.99. We spent $26 there. Oh, I also bought some patterns for making some office clothing for myself. We'll see how soon I get around to that. The patterns were only $0.34 each. One pattern for a full length dress, like I like, and another for making a jacket. The last one is for making shorts. I also have this really valuable book which shows how to enlarge patterns.

Ds2 had this really awesome idea to decorate ds1's cake. He used a stencil that he made! He then sprinkled cocoa powder on top. I thought it was just the neatest idea! When we went out to milk last night, I was wishing I'd bought cake decorations but then we got in and ds2 had come up with the stencil idea.

I snapped a lot of photos, ds1 always acts like he hates his birthday parties. I had to go into his room when he was napping, looking for tape and he always puts a blanket against the bottom of the door, so he knows I went into his room. So he was really grumpy when he got up and was complaining about how I used my key to get into his room while he was sleeping. So I told him I only did it because I was looking for tape! Then he apologized. In this next photo he was cutting the cake into slices and he gave ds2 a quarter of the cake and the thought of having done that just cracked him up to the point he was shrieking with laughter. His eyes are crinkled totally shut, his head thrown back, mouth wide open, he's totally cracking up. Ds2 is examining the huge piece of cake with dismay and it just make ds1 laugh even harder.
Here's the birthday boy with his new desk. Finally someplace to put that SpongeBob lamp (normally retails for $20 but we found it marked down to $5 at Lowe's in June 2006).
I wish I could get here early every workday morning - it would help if I didn't hit the snooze button so many times. Then I'd have time weekday mornings at least, to blog.

Until next time.

Leanin' Tree Cards

I went into a little shop (downtown in the big city) on Thursday just to see what they had in the store. When I got in there, I saw an elderly man and assumed him to be the owner. I have this thing about supporting small business owners, and immediately started wondering what little trinket I could buy that wouldn't damage my credit card too much. You know I have the same feeling at yard sales. This obligation to "buy something" and not just be a "Lookie Lou".

As I browsed, I came across these incredibly beautiful cards...

I have been dismayed at how expensive cards are starting to be, even from Walmart. You can get cheapie $0.99 cards, but if you want even a halfway decent nice one you're looking at three dollars and up. I bought a Hallmark Valentine's Day card for my dh there yesterday which cost $3.34.

I have found that you can get a fairly nice card from "dollar" stores, but they are mostly pastel and vanilla-type cards. Not bad for a dollar, but if you want something spectacular, try and find an outlet that sells Leanin' Tree.

While at the feedstore yesterday, I noticed they had the Leanin' Tree Valentine's Day cards for sale (the other little shop didn't have them in stock yet). Then I realized they always sell Leanin' Tree but I hadn't taken much notice of the cards on previous visits since they sell mostly the cowboy/cowgirl versions, which wouldn't be something I'd be interested in giving (the one I linked to is mild, some are rather risque or disgusting). I bought two of the Valentine's Day cards (which were not cowboy/cowgirl).

This morning I decided to go online to the Leanin' Tree site to check them out. The cards I saw in person retailed starting at $2.49, but online, they are all $1.85. Plus they have an offer if you buy 20 cards, you get 10 free. I'm seriously considering buying my cards here this year. I have always wanted to be organized with sending birthday cards to family, but I usually only get cards sent to my mom, and my three of my four sisters. I always send Mother's Day cards to my mom and all my sisters, my mother-in-law and my grandma. My MIL bought me a "card organizer" for Christmas. It has a folder for each month, with places to write birthdays on each folder. Anyway, I figure the cards would end up costing me $1.465 each ($1.85/each for first 20, plus you get 10 more free, $6.95 s/h). Maybe I could finally get it together this year! They do restrict the offer somewhat, you can't buy Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Cards. But that leaves Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays, get well cards, anniversaries, etc.

Which reminds me. I made this really cool Christmas gift for my mom one year. I took photos of everyone in the family, or got photos from them to scan, and then I put together a calendar (found online from Microsoft Templates which uses Word) with photos for each person for that month, and their name on their birthdate. My mom LOVED that calendar and has since asked for another one each year. (I'm the bad daughter, I have never made her another one since). Okay, hold up. I just went to Microsoft Templates to see about downloading the 2007 photo calendar and they have two available - one Monday through Sunday (*WHO* uses a calendar that goes Mon-Sun?), but they BOTH require Word 2007. I barely got Word 2003 last year. Sheesh.

I was thinking about creating a calendar for my mom, for a late Christmas gift. I did recently order color cartridges for my printer... but now it would really become a labor of love since I'd have to use this 2005 template, and repopulate the dates... or maybe there is someplace else online to download a template similar to this one? I have downloaded this one, in case Microsoft Templates stops offering it.

I bought this card for a friend of mine who just got both her legs broken by a spooked horse bucking and kicking while she was removing the saddle from its back. :-(

The card in real life is just breathtakingly beautiful, and the envelope has the same colors and design in washed out colors. The picture you see at the site hardly gives the card justice. And I paid $2.79 (plus tax!) for it - which I still think is a great price compared to what I'm seeing at Walmart.

I only have 10 more minutes before it's time to feed.

I'm also doing this romantic Valentine's Day card thing this year. I did it once, years and years ago. You take your card to your sweetie, address it, put your stamp on the envelope and then insert it into a larger envelope. Put appropriate postage and address to (one of the places) Loveland, Colorado. Loveland will hand cancel your stamp, and send your card on its way. I think it's a cool idea. I emailed several friends about it, but there was no response. Oh well. Maybe it's just me that thinks it's cool. You can read more about it here: Get a Valentine Postmark.

I did tell three of my coworkers about it as well. One by email. She's new. She didn't respond at all. The other was a coworker who just turned 64. She said she would never bother to do something like that because her husband wouldn't appreciate it. The third person is one of my younger coworkers, I think he must be 25 now. He is newly married (about six months) and his wife is pregnant. I think he might do it, I told him his wife *would* appreciate it, since women tend to appreciate things like that.

Time to feed!!

Until next time.

Baby Sweater Finally Finished!

Ohhhhh... I haven't blogged since Monday... first an update to the freezing cold weather I complained about in my last blog entry. I mentioned the frozen water pipes on Sunday, and how cold it was on Monday, but never mentioned the fact that we still didn't have water by noon that day. As it turns out, our well pump froze and cracked. The cast iron part of it cracked.

My M&FIL showed up on Tuesday morning early with a new pump and helped us get it installed. We had water again by 4pm. What a blessing for them to help us out. No fun being without water. Their pump also went out on them, but they live about 100 miles north of us.

It's been a busy week. On Wednesday I bought another sewing machine. It's a Riccar and I found the original receipt in its wooden cabinet. It was purchased for $156 by one Margaret Edwards on March 19, 1966 in Torrance, California. Coincidentally, I paid $75 for the machine, the wooden cabinet it sits in, plus lots and lots of sewing items. I will definitely be photographing all those items for a blog entry one day soon. The machine is currently in a shop, waiting to be overhauled. It costs $79.95; the guy cleans and oils and go throughs the machine restoring it to brand new.

Riccar still sells sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. I found their website has manuals to their old sewing machines. I was really impressed by that (many companies seem to abandon their products within a few years and finding a manual can be impossible). The manual was included with this machine, so I wrote to Riccar to let them know I could scan this manual for their collection. I got an email back that said this, "We would really appreciate if you can forward that so we can place it on our website. Hope everything goes well with your tune up; unfortunately most parts are obsolete due to the age of the machine. Thanks so much."

AGH. Well, I haven't updated my friends, but one of them is sure to tell me, "Told you so!" if it turns out this machine has anything broken. I don't think it will though. I think it is going to be a fine machine and a great blessing. The Walmart special will need to go back. Plan B is to haul out the old Singer my mom gave me years ago and pay to have *it* rehauled. But I really don't think I'll have to resort to that, at least not now.

Thursday was a blur... Friday another blur... and now it's 9:30pm and I'm still up. I did manage between last night and tonight, to finish the baby sweater! I plan to have it packaged and ready to ship on Monday. My sister's baby is 10 months old, and they live in Texas. I hope she will be able to put him in it for a couple more months at least. I made it to fit a 12 month old infant. I was almost done with it by November 20th, but then we had a bit of a crisis situation, so I was unable to pick it up again until just last night. Between last night and tonight I crocheted the buttonhole band, and the collar. Sewed on the buttons, tucked in beginning and ending pieces, finished the toque, made the pom-pom, sewed the buttons on the toque and the chin strap. It's really quite a sweet looking little outfit. I started this little sweater on September 30th. Geez, almost four months. But I took a 8 week hiatus. Too bad, my sister could have gotten a lot more use out of it... maybe. I will ask her to photograph the baby in his new little sweater so I can post a picture here.

Note to self: Never attempt to crochet with this yarn - Bernat Baby Coordinates Sweet Stripes - again. It is horrible for crocheting. The little strand of shiny material around the yarn gets hung up in the crochet hook every single stitch. It might work okay with knitting.

I wish I could be as prolific and as good a knitter as these ladies over at the Sweater-A-Month KAL. I will definitely be visiting this blog over the next year!

OH, and ds2 and I FINALLY got hoof trims done today. One of my milker's front hooves were so long she was being forced to walk crooked. Poor dear. Oh my, oh geez. I think the last time I did hoof trims was on October 2nd! That is far too long to wait between hoof trims. I usually try to get them done every 6 to 8 weeks. It is much easier to trim and keep the hooves in nice condition doing them more often. It has been sprinkling a bit for the past couple days, so it was actually easier to work on their hooves since they were kind of damp from walking on damp ground.

Until next time.

Did I Get a Good Deal or Not?

When we got satellite Internet, I cancelled our second phone line. Our home land line ranged from $42 to $50 with long distance at $0.05/minute from $10 to $25/month.

So about $52-$75/month.

When I cancelled the second phone line... I think the bill was going to be about $15 less, but it would still bounce around. So it would have been from $45 on up.

I decided last night that I wanted to have Call Waiting ($3) and so I went to the website to order. While there, I decided Caller ID ($5.85) would also be nice to have, so I ordered that as well. I anticipated the bill to go up by nearly ten dollars. So now we were up to $55/month+ again.

I didn't know that ordering these services was going to be like a shopping cart, so I got to a certain point and thought I was done. I left the computer for over an hour, came back to discover that I still had to hit one last button. I did that, but the "thank you for ordering" page didn't show that I'd ordered anything.

So I called this morning to double check and make sure my order had gone through. It had not. The guy I talked to was very chipper and nice and suggested a "bundle" where I could get three services -- the Call Waiting, Caller ID and one more. I choice the Voice Messaging. I always loved having Voice Messaging instead of having to fuss with an answering machine. So then the guy tells me that they have another thing they can add to this bundle. He says for $40.99/month, I can get these three services, plus free long distance to anywhere in the US, including in-state long distance. That is where the bulk of our long distance occurs, within our home state. As we live in the country, in a different area code, whilst most of our family and friends, my job, etc., live in an area code which makes our calls to them long distance. In-state long distance is free within our state on our *CELL* phones, but they sometimes don't get the best reception while inside the house.

Anyway... I will be curious to see just what the phone bill is each month. The guy made it sound like that's it, period, $40.99. But I bet there will be taxes and surcharges and all kinds of other things like that.

I won't know if I got a good deal for sure until I receive two phone bills. The next one will have a credit amount on it, for cancelling the second phone line. I mean, I guess I could just call and ask them, but I'm not THAT curious.

I'm happy to have those three extra services on the home line. They are nice little things to have.

Until next time.

TOILET Mystery

Today we had to butcher some bougainvillea bushes, well just one (you thought I was going to say a goat, didn' t you?) but we have about five more to go. My FIL butchered one for us to see how he wants us to treat the others. He did a horrid job, I wish I'd brought the camera. If I go when the others are done, I'll get some pictures. He made a terrible sticky looking mess out of the poor thing, it is just a mess with suckers sticking up all over, it's just gross looking. I have always looked at poorly trimmed pruned trees and thought how awful that someone didn't know what they were doing.

I used to own a bougainvillea bush a few years ago, and I never butchered it down to nothing. I pruned my lantana down to nothing every fall, but never my bougainvillea. One of my neighbors had two bougainvillea bushes that she kept trimmed with scissors and they were nicely shaped. She also never pruned hers down to nothing.

Anyway... then we had agreed to help my mother move some furniture from a storage unit that belongs to my sister and her boyfriend. But while we were waiting for my mother to arrive, we went to one of my favorite places to buy home improvement type things. Okay, it USED to be my favorite place, because the prices were so amazing cheap. It was a cheapskates paradise!

But now (according to one of the employees) the new manager runs around with a pricing gun, putting astronomical prices on things. For example, I found the Glacier Bay 8 Inch Hi-Arch Two Handle Kitchen Faucet that I almost bought from Home Depot last weekend. Dh and I got into a bit of a tiff since he thought he'd told me it wouldn't work (without modification) since we live in a manufactured home. If he told me, I did not hear him. He found a faucet that *would* work because it had long copper pieces coming from underneath the faucet, which is what we need to hook up to our kitchen sink pipes. But it was a regular height faucet.

Ds2 had been wanting a hi-arch kitchen faucet for some time, and I want one, too!! It is frustrating washing the tall half gallon jars we store our milk in, and the milk pails. I'm also beginning to realize that I don't have to get the cheapest thing there is, just to save money. In the long run, you end up with the product breaking, and having to replace it again.

I digress... the faucet had a sticker on it for $40.00. I asked one of the employees if that was really the price and told him that's almost what it costs from Home Depot. Actually it's $48.00 from HD. First, let me tell you there are signs all over that state changing tags is illegal. So the guy tells me the manager might be up front when he's ringing me up, so he has to be careful about changing tags because the manager might remember what he put on the faucet. He removed the tag, and said he would find a pricing gun and reprice the faucet to $20 or maybe $15. So I hung around for several minutes, and he never came back. Finally I left that area and dh and I looked around a bit more and then finally I suggested we just leave. So. While we are checking out, someone else gets the faucet, the tag of which had been removed by the employee. The man stands there waiting until we are done, then asks the cashier, another employee, how much is this faucet. The man takes a look at it, and says, "Twelve dollars." OH. MY. GOSH. I just about fainted right on the spot. The feelings that went through me, like, "THAT'S MINE!! I HAD IT FIRST! Give it BACK to me!" And "Why does HE get it for twelve? NO FAIR!!!"

I was really, really upset, but finally consoled myself with this: The man was wearing an identification badge, which indicated he worked in a group home. He also had a person with him that was obviously impaired, and probably lived in the group home. I know those places aren't rich, and I guess they were meant to have that faucet. Also, the fact that the price tag was removed, what if the manager had been there with the cashier when I asked for the price? What if I had been accused of removing the tag?

I am sure a better faucet will come along. One last thing about faucets. Dh and I looked around at Lowe's over the weekend, pricing a few things, and among those were kitchen faucets. They had some with price tags OVER $500!! Why?! Are they lined with gold, or maybe diamonds? I can't imagine paying that much for a faucet. It's not like the faucet will last 1000 years longer than any other. No one even lives that long.

Now, on to the toilet mystery.

Some time ago, I decided I wanted new toilets for our home. One for the main (boys) bathroom, and one for my bathroom. I am sick and tired of having to fill a gallon bucket with water, JUST to flush my toilet. I hate it. I hate it. I happened to casually mention this to my MIL on the phone one day. She told me they just got a new toilet from Home Depot and said I deserved new toilets and they are only $50.00. I told her that I didn't want a brand new toilet, which would work just as horribly as mine were working. I told her I was hoping to go to this "second hand" home improvement place and she became quite alarmed saying, "NO! Don't do that. Do not go there for a toilet! You deserve new ones!" I tried to explain my reasoning to her, and she was just not hearing it. A week later, she gave us $115 so we could buy two toilets from Home Depot. I've been hanging onto the money since that time, trying to figure out which toilets to buy. Home Depot's cheapy toilets, the ones she said we should buy, were $44. But CHEAP. I am sure I would have been using my trusty bucket to flush them! And I didn't want that. BTW, MIL's new toilet was not the cheapy toilet. I think she would have been happy with the cheapy toilet, and therefore attempted to push the cheapy toilets onto us. She specifically mentioned her new toilet being extra tall, and she says she feels like a child with her feet not even touching the floor. So I know for sure her new toilet wasn't one of the cheapy ones (her husband is a spendthrift, while she's a cheapskate dumpster diver -- gotta love her for that!!).

So finally today, we got to go to this home improvement place. They are a non-profit that takes donations of things from homes being knocked down, or maybe someone's upgrading, etc. They used to have killer prices. Like gallons of "oops" paint for $2.50. Now the gallons are $5.00. Bummer. I used to go there and buy gallons of colors, just to have paint on hand if I wanted to do a project.

I started checking out the toilets, and I am pretty sure I remember that American Standard is a good toilet, at least when you are shopping at Home Depot.

I found two American Standard toilets. I paid $10 for my toilet. It is "shell" colored, according to the American Standard site. My toilet was missing the tank lid, but dh says he can make me one. That's fine. I hope to cover it with one of those fuzzy things soon anyway. The other toilet was $25 and it is white.

I know these things about the toilets: They are both "Right Height" and they both have elongated bowls.

Those two things right off the bat make the toilets more expensive than a normal cheap $50 toilet. I went to the American Standard site and found that there are 71 toilets to look through. I was able to narrow that list down, by crossing out all the one-piece toilets, round toilets, and regular height toilets. Now there are 19 toilets to look through and figure out which are the ones I bought.

Searching on Home Depot, I found this American Standard toilet, with an elongated bowl, and "Right Height". For the toilet bowl and seat, they want $161.25. The tank costs -- GOOD GRIEF -- the danged tank costs $165.00!!!

Some of the toilets at the AS site are very expensive, for example, the Retrospect Elongated Right Height toilet costs $435. The Champion Right Height Elongated toilet costs $424-$594 based on color.

Now my dear reader, if you have made it this far, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. Well... first off, my dear MIL was so aghast at the thought of my buying a "second hand" toilet, and now it looks as if I may have purchased two very nice quality toilets for a mere $35. We now have enough money left over to buy a brand new hi-arch kitchen sink faucet, if we so choose.

I really wish I could go back and buy the matching bathroom sink. Well, I don't know if it really matches EXACTLY, but there was a bathroom sink that was peach colored, with really nice high quality brass handles. It was $60 though! That is really high priced, in my opinion. I still wish I could have it for my bathroom. I do like to have nice things sometimes.

Back to the fuss... secondly, there are some nice features to the AS toilets, like the Champion Flushing System... or the Cadet Pressure Assisted flushing which run $625-$862 depending on the color.

I've been googling a bit while blogging... and it's starting to look like my toilets might be the Champion line, which features a "flush tower" instead of a standard flapper. According to this site, it's one of the Best Toilets. But now with more research, I see my toilets are not Champions. That means I can eliminate 7 more toilets from my list. That leaves 12 to research. That's much more manageable. I'm sure it will be much easier in the daylight tomorrow. I can take a picture and bring it in to compare with the others for one thing...

I think one of the things that may have horrified my MIL was the thought of picking through grungy, ugly, filthy toilets. These toilets are relatively clean. It won't take much scrubbing to make them look brand new.

Enough about toilets. It's past my bedtime.

Until next time.

Lowe's - Awesome Clearance Deals

Today my dh and I went to Lowe's. We went by Lowe's yesterday on the way home, but were just too tired to make the stop. It is ~35 mile trip back into town. With the price of gasoline, as we headed out again this morning, I mentioned that I hadn't felt like stopping either, but wished we'd just made ourselves to do it and be done with it.

We had to take a power sprayer back that had two defective parts. We ended up returning it to buy a less expensive model. We paid $564.87 for this one, and decided to buy one that only cost $199.00. Lowe's was offering a 10% off on your first purchase if you apply for a credit card, so we decided to do that, too. It is just criminal the amounts of credit they give you. LOL. They approved us for $15,000.00! This is for a personal credit card, not a business line.

Anyway, the new sprayer ended up costing $193.07.

On the way out of Lowe's... we noticed a clearance table... and saw a Sponge Bob lamp. No price, just a sticker that said 50% off. So I asked the guy who was out there, and he said "How about this?" and wrote $5.00 on the sticker, crossing out the 50% off. I thought that was great. My oldest son likes Sponge Bob, so I got it for him. I went ahead and paid for that. Then I started looking around a bit more. I wish I had thought more clearly, because I have at least two nieces who are diehard SB fans that would have LOVED a lamp also.

Now the things we ended up buying probably won't mean a whole lot to most people. But we will be able to use them -- that is if we can put them someplace so we'll know where to find them the next time we need them!!

One of the first things my dh saw was some drawer pulls. I am constantly complaining about ours in the kitchen. They have these sides that stick out and are always catching on my work dresses or my shorts, ripping holes.

In the photo to the left, the handle on the top is one of the old ones. The bottom handle is one of the new ones, Brainerd®3" Ribbon and Reed Antique Pewter Pull. Unfortunately, there were only FOUR of these pulls. There are six drawers, plus there are the cupboard door handles. But since when do I care about matching or style? I will live with it, for not having to worry about having my clothes ripped to shreds. Besides, the handles cost fifty cents each on clearance and normally retail for $6.97 each!!! So what should have cost $27.88 came to a whopping $2.00!!

The next thing I found that didn't have a price was a pack of ENERGIZER Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries - 4 pack. I found a normal retail price at Buy.com for $9.99. The guy marked them down to FIFTY cents! Whoo hooooo!

Next we found these packages of screen door kits. We are always needing hinges for one thing or another, and each package contains two sturdy hinges, for only a quarter! But with this package, there is also a screen door spring (not sure what we'd use those for) but there is also a "hook-n-eye", screws and a door pull. So we first got eight packages, then decided to get 12... we would have got them all, but didn't want to be greedy. That left at least a couple dozen more. As it turns out, while I was examining the receipt tonight, I noticed the lady only charged us for ONE package. I found a similar screen door kit at this site and they retail for $9.49 for each set!!! So a $113.88 value for only ONE QUARTER!

Next we found these gate hinges. They are really sturdy with a spring in the middle. They actually rang up at the regular retail price, $8.98! As you can see, they were clearanced down to $0.25! The set includes 2 hinges, a handle, a hook-n-eye, and screws. $36 value, one dollar. LOL!

We found a couple more drawer pulls. One was regularly $3.98 down to fifty cents. Another was $5.88 also marked down to fifty cents. Some "Narrow Loose Utility Hinges" were regularly $4.29 marked down to a quarter.

We got two "ladder bags" which I couldn't find any on the Internet, but they are a canvas type bag with pockets and you strap it over the top of your ladder, and it holds your tools. The clearance price was $3.75. We figured they probably cost $15 or $20 at regular price.

We are planning to make a new mailbox stand, and we found house numbers that usually cost $4.98 each for only fifty cents each. $14.94 value for $1.50.

We found some tiny jigsaw blades normally $2.47 down to fifty cents. The cashier fussed a bit on this item, but let us have it.

I got a package of solid brass coat and hat hooks, found some on the Internet that looked like them, retailing for $10.49. $0.50!

And last but not least, dh found some "super pliers" advertised to cut easily through hard wire. He lost or rather, he thinks *I* lost his only pair that could cut through concrete meshing. There was actually an 8" adjustable wrench and the 7.5" Cam-Action Diagonal Pliers. Regularly $24.98, marked down to $5.00. He bought two sets.

Grand total $31.00. Regular retail cost: $329.66.

Whoooohoooo! As it turns out, it was a good thing we didn't stop at Lowe's yesterday!

Until next time.
