Well, our last kids for the season are as they say, "on the ground." We now have eight baby goats in our yard. Nine total, but one went to her new home the day after she was born.
Miss M was bred to a buckling that a neighbor was leasing. M was not too keen on the idea of spending time with the young buck and made that clear by soundly headbutting the poor boy until he was hiding in a corner head first so she would stop beating him (after the fact, I was informed by a list member of another list I'm on that this behavior should not have been tolerated, duh! So now M will respond to mating with fighting with the buck, like her granddam does. Her granddam fought the buck three years in a row, finally at her fourth year of breeding, she cooperated). We left M with him for three days just to see if she would eventually cooperate. He apparently did the deed, because one of her babies looks exactly like his sire, and he was the only buck she was exposed to during the optimum time.
The birth was blessedly uneventful. I didn't even know she was in labor until my ds2 told me that dh just told him M was having her kids when he went out to milk. I rushed out and she was not actually having them, but waited about 15 minutes. Both babies are doing well, and so is the dam.
Until next time.
